Set up document checkers for bookkeepers and trades
Someone types invoices and receipts into a spreadsheet by hand. You set up a reader that turns a PDF into a ledger row and checks the arithmetic, and flags anything that doesn't add up for a person, instead of guessing.
It fits when you like sorting and organizing, you're fine with a tutorial or more, and you'd rather look after a few clients.
Week 1: the job
- Find who types in invoices or receipts near you: a bookkeeper, a plumber, a small office.
- Install n8n and a free local model.
Week 2: build the checker
- Read the fields from a text PDF; never let the AI do the sums.
- Check the arithmetic in the workflow, and flag what doesn't add up.
Week 3: test it
- Eight sample documents, three that should be flagged. Keep every run.
- Note what it can't read: photos and scans with no text.
Week 4: one conversation
- Show one person a flagged invoice on their own kind of paperwork.
- Ask how long their typing takes each week, and listen.
The limits, before you start
It reads PDFs with a text layer; a photo of a receipt is flagged, not read. It checks arithmetic, not whether a price was fair.
